Plant Care Assistant

The successful applicant will participate in caring for and growing experimental plant materials. Duties include pot filling, watering, staking, bagging, harvesting, processing seeds and all preparatory and clean-up steps involved. Participation in Integrated Pest Management Program including monitoring pests, application of beneficial insects, and occasional pesticide application is required.
Applicants must be responsible, reliable, able to work independently and with a group, able to lift 50 to 70 lbs., and have a keen attention to details. Experience in Pest Management is desirable.

Description:

Job Duties:

Staff Accountant/Payroll
The successful candidate must be a self-starter with demonstrated organizational skills, capable of operating within a fast-paced growth environment. The primary responsibility of this position is management of the payroll function. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Bioinformatics Scientist
Mendel is looking for an individual to lead an important
project to collect, organize and analyze data with the
goal of improving traits in Miscanthus and other plants
for use as biofeedstocks. You will work with biologists,
agronomists, business people, and computer scientists in
an interdisciplinary environment. This is a well-funded,
full-time position in our Hayward, California offices.

Research Associate - Chemical and Genetic Screening

Patent Agent
Job summary:
This position will work with our intellectual property team to focus on preparation and prosecution of patent applications worldwide. This position will work with patent agents, attorneys, scientists and management to create and prosecute utility, PVPA and plant patent applications.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct prosecution of foreign patent applications in-house and with outside counsel. Collaborate with outside foreign counsel on ex-US patent filings.
- Draft PCT utility applications related to MBI gene discovery and technology programs.
- Draft Plant Variety Protection Act and plant patent applications, primarily in support of MBI biofuels program.
- Meet with and communicate regularly with senior legal and scientific staff for feedback and provide updates on new applications and prosecution status.
- Conduct regular docket maintenance reviews and recommend actions as necessary.
Requirements:
- Advanced degree in plant biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline required.
- Minimum 2 years hands-on experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications required.
- Legal firm and/or biotechnology industry experience preferred.
- Must be admitted to practice before the USPTO.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Senior Facilities Technician
Job Summary:
The Senior Facilities Technician position provides comprehensive day-to-day support of Mendel's facilities and equipment maintenance programs. The position will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of all programs in support of Mendel's strategic facility plan. The position will work closely with scientific and administrative staff to accomplish key facility related goals. The position will supervise up to three non-exempt personnel and is required to respond to off-hour emergencies.
Responsibilities:
Tracks routine service requests and ensures timely completion of request work. Makes periodic or special inspections of facility to determine necessary service/repair work. Assists in development of facility expense and capital budgets and participates in annual equipment inventory process. Performs or supervises routine furniture & fixture installation and/or repair. Coordinates outside vendor or in-house service calls for all mechanical, electrical, air, or water systems in facility. Designs and implements all facility and equipment preventative maintenance programs. Writes, reviews and revises facility/equipment SOP's as necessary. Interacts with scientific staff/IT on equipment procurement, installation and maintenance. Provides input for necessary facility modifications and improvements. Monitors the work environment to assure safe working conditions and compliance with applicable regulations. Works with Director, Research Operations to provide for all EH&S compliance throughout facility. Coordinates weekly activities for comprehensive waste, recycling and other "green" initiatives as required in the facilities. Supervise up to three non-exempt personnel; make hire, termination, promotion and merit recommendations. As necessary, performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma required.
- Vocational training and/or college coursework preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years experience in a direct facilities technician role required.
- Experience in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or research lab setting preferred.
- General knowledge of maintenance/construction trade & regulations, blueprint/schematic drawings and facility/building standards required.
- General knowledge of HVAC, refrigeration, air, water, mechanical, electrical, fire and security systems required.
- Familiarity with health & safety regulations in a facilities environment required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Facilities and/or health & safety certifications desirable.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Able to operate a computer and standard business programs (MSWord, MSExcel, Internet, etc.)
- Able to work in a heavy matrix environment.
